Medieval Tactics in Total War: Pike and Shot Formations
In Total War pike and shot games, old medieval habits like tight infantry packing and steady forward pressure still decide fights when you adapt them to pikes. Players who treat the pike block as a moving wall instead of a static line win more often in the early game.
Building the Pike Block
Start with two or three pike units side by side in a shallow rectangle. Keep the formation depth at six ranks so the rear ranks can rotate forward when the front tires. This setup stops cavalry charges cold on open ground.
- Place the block on slight forward slopes to gain extra momentum on contact.
- Order the unit to walk rather than run until the enemy reaches 30 meters; running scatters your ranks and drops defense.
- Rotate tired pike units out after two minutes of melee to avoid morale collapse.
Shot Placement and Timing
Pair each pike block with two shot units set 20 meters behind the flanks. Fire only when the enemy commits to the charge. Hold the shot until the pikes lock, then let the muskets or arquebuses pour fire into the stalled attackers.
| Formation | Shot Role | Result in 5 Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Two pikes + two shot | Flank fire after contact | Enemy cavalry routed, infantry morale drops 30% |
| Three pikes + one shot | Direct rear support | Center holds but flanks fold under cavalry |
Shift the shot forward once the pike line pushes the enemy back. This keeps pressure on routing units and prevents them from reforming. Test the timing on the training map first because misjudged volleys hit your own pikes.
