How to Counter Meta Strategies in Total War Multiplayer
Meta strategies in Total War multiplayer often revolve around spamming one strong unit type or rushing a specific powerful lord. You beat them by reading the opening moves and shifting your plan before the main fight starts.
Scout the Map in the First Two Minutes
Send a fast unit or two forward right away. Look for the enemy’s early building choices or the direction their starting troops head. If you spot multiple ranged buildings, you know they plan to kite you across open ground.
That single piece of information changes your first recruitment wave. You can drop cavalry or fast monsters instead of more infantry.
Build Direct Counters Instead of Mirror Matches
Stop copying the same army you see on tier lists. Pick units that punish the meta pick directly.
- Against mass archers or crossbows, bring shielded infantry with high missile block chance and a few cavalry to run them down once they stop moving.
- Against heavy cavalry blobs, field cheap spears or pikes in loose formation and keep your own cavalry on the wings to punish overextensions.
- Against monster or single-entity spam, bring anti-large infantry and focus-fire with ranged units that have high armor-piercing.
Use Terrain to Break Their Ideal Engagement
Meta players want flat ground so their ranged units can fire for the whole battle. Deny that.
Force fights near forests or hills. Trees block line of sight and break up cavalry charges. A hill lets your melee reach their archers faster while your own ranged stays protected.
Prioritize Targets During the Clash
Do not trade evenly. Focus the units that let their strategy work.
- Kill their lords or heroes first if they provide buffs or leadership.
- Remove the enemy’s fastest units next so they cannot chase your flankers.
- Only then deal with the main blob.
One well-timed cavalry charge into the backline often collapses an entire meta army because the rest of their troops lose bonuses or morale.
Review the Replay and Adjust the Next Game
After each loss, watch the replay at double speed and note the exact moment their strategy gained the upper hand. Change only one thing in your next army list or deployment and test it immediately. Small targeted tweaks beat broad overhauls.
